For some reason my university requires a number of vaccinations even though they didn't mention it when I first enrolled last year. I only have one that is expiring and was wondering what are the options around here if I just need to get one vaccination. I am a young adult and haven't had one in over 10 years, so have only ever had them done by my pediatrician. My insurance has a higher co-pay for urgent care clinics compared to retail clinics, but I really don't know the difference. I'm in Lake Ridge if that helps, but have no problem driving elsewhere.

ummm? just go to the doctor? Co-pay should be a lot less than Urgent Care or a Retail Clinic.

BTW, a Retail Clinic is like a CVS Minute Clinic. Urgent Care places specifically have "Urgent" in their names.

Doesn't your university have a vaccination clinic? Most seem to anticipate that students will not be fully up to date with vaccinations and have several days where you can walk in and get up to date. Most insurance does fully cover them. I would suggest searching on your school website for that information.

I don't have a local doctor. Would it be fine just to call a random doctor in my plan and say I just need a shot?

They do but they do not submit insurance claims and it wasn't very cost efficient. I could submit the claim on my own, but would rather go somewhere that would do it.

It is very easy to submit the claim form for shots. But, they are so much more affordable than going to most doctors and you don't have to worry about your shot records not being updated because the people that need the proof are right there. It isn't so difficult, you are making it more difficult for yourself.

It's possible the Fairfax County Clinics will do them for you. I'm not sure what vacs. they give, but we went to one for HEP A when we were traveling to China.

Just go to minute clinic. They'll do all the insurance stuff for you, you just have to pay whatever copay you have (possibly none since it's preventative care).

I <3 Minute Clinic.

The CVS minute clinics will submit to your insurance. Target also submits to insurance (they did with my daughter's flu shot but not sure what other vaccines they offer). Safeway has a good vaccine service and I'm betting they will also submit. Just call them and ask.

But your best best is probably the CVS minute clinic.

Also, in Prince William County over by the Aldi in Woodbridge (near Lowe's) there is a county medical office. Anyone, I think, can go in there and get free/reduced priced vaccinations. When my son was a baby, my health insurance did not cover vaccines so I had all of them done there, for free.

Grsz11-- Here is the link for PWC health services: Community Health Services

It appears that if you are still considered a "teen" you could have immunizations done (maybe for free). If not, check the other link for Immunizations. You can get them done there. If you bring your insurance card they may use that or they may decide just not to charge you. You won't get charged for a doctor's visit at least.
