There's a chance I may be accepting a job offer in Fair Lakes, Fairfax within the next couple of weeks and would like to start researching some apartments in the area. I want to live as close to DC as possible but keep my commute at 45 minutes max. Google says Fair Lakes to DC is about a half hour drive, but I know it's unreasonable to expect that to hold true during rush hour commutes.

I'm not giving a budget b/c I'm not really looking for advice on places to live. My budget varies based on proximity to DC, so I need to determine what that proximity is before it would make any sense to talk budgets. Right now I'm simply curious as to how far east on a map I can go while still being within a 45 minute commute to Fair Lakes.

You could likely go as far as DC, as long as you were very close to 66W, as you will be heading against traffic. You'll hit some traffic, but not too much.

If you're in Falls Church or Arlington west of Ballston, you should be fine.

I think Falls Church area is ideal for what you are looking for. Close enough to the city for nights out, yet not too far from Fair Lakes for your daily commute.

The closer to 66 you are, the better off you'll be. I would take that drive down 29 and 50 and see how you like it before committing to that. Every time I've driven east on 66 on Friday evenings, I'm stunned how much traffic there is considering it's a reverse commute.

western arlington and falls church are so incredibly close to each other. I don't think you can go wrong here.
