If you end up working in Montgomery County, you should live in MD. I work there and live in VA, and the only reason is because I grew up in VA and all my friends and family are there. If you have no ties do yourself a favor and live in MD. Most of my coworkers do, although I don't think many of them live in Montgomery County. You can live further out in MD where housing is cheaper and still have a much much better commute than Leesburg to MD would be.

I definitely wouldn't even think about buying anything until you know if you're working in VA or MD and can better plan what your commute will be though.

White's Ferry is great as an amusement, but not something you take for commuting. (Unless you live within a mile or so of it--then it might work as a commuter ferry.) It's down a side road that's cumbersome to get to, and the ferry ride is slow.
