Go to the Dulles Wegmans! I live equal distance between the Dulles and Fairfax Wegmans and agree with you about the Fairfax Wegmans. Dulles used to be much more crowded until they opened the Wegmans in Leesburg.

I only visit that Wegman's in the evening or early morning.
The parking lot is awful, agree.
For fresh fruit and vegetables at reasonable price, you could try H-Mart, the oriental market across Route 50 from Paul VI.
It too is crowded on a weekend afternoon but there are parking options as there are other stores nearby.

Have you tried Whole Foods? The Wegmans and Global Foods in Woodbridge have great fresh produce.

If you have any of the large Asian markets nearby, try one of those. Their produce is typically lower-priced than other stores. There is a Grand Mart in Sterling and a big one out in Sully/Fairfax (can't remember the name). Also great for meats, seafoods, and baked items.

On the Eastern side of the county some of the best produce is at Rorers on Route 1, just South of the Thai Herbs and the new Bestway. They gets their stuff mainly from local growers (such as Hanover tomatoes and Winchester apples) and also offer steamed crabs in season. The prices are very reasonable too considering the Farmers Market quality.

Wegmans has fantastic produce. If you must go on the weekend, go on Saturday night. Also, always park on the lower level (covered parking). I'm referring to the Fairfax location.
