How bad is the commute during rush hour? any public transportation options available? I'm in Vienna now and it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes. Looking for a little bit more space, great school district and manageable commute, a.k.a unicorns

Depending upon where you are heading to in DC, you might want to look in Maryland so you have no need to cross the Potomac.

Here's a link to the Metrobus map for northern Virginia. There are not many bus options in the Great Falls area.

People don't move to Great Falls because they are looking for an easy commute to DC during rush hour. I can't imagine it would be any better than your current commute. I'd check on the Maryland forum and ask about commutes into DC from Potomac.

It depends on where in DC and also where in Great Falls, which is a pretty huge area. If you are looking close to McLean, you'll likely drive down GW Parkway to get into the city, and the commute should be an hour or less. Not terribly different than coming from Vienna, so if you consider your commute manageable now, then you should be okay.

It's easier to get downtown from Vienna, where you're closer to 66 or the Toll Road, than from Great Falls, unless you live in the part of Vienna close to Reston (where the other side of Route 7 is Great Falls).

In general, from Great Falls, you'll end up spending time in backed-up traffic during rush hour on either Georgetown Pike, Leesburg Pike, or Old Dominion Drive before you ever get to the GW Parkway, the Toll Road, Route 66 or Lee Highway heading into DC.
