Would be helpful if you mentioned your budget for housing. If money's no object it's not a bad commute from Fairfax County since you'd be going opposite normal traffic. There are some nice new communities around Lorton that would be an easy commute plus you'd have benefit of a really good school system.

A close commute would be Montclair. Nice sense of community with numerous events during the year. There are some townhomes and many single family homes. You didn't mention your budget so it really is hard to make an intelligent recommendation.

I wouldn't commute from Manassas. You wouldn't be gaining any benefit there. So-so schools and a cross-county and then southward commute. Just no benefit there for the extra mileage. Fredericksburg is nice but you would be in a "real" commute up to Quantico. Perosonally, I would avoid that at all costs if you can--and you can. So, the best thing is to to move a bit north of Quantico so you have a reverse commute. Montclair is a very nice, older, well-established neighborhood and you might be able to get one of their smaller homes in that price range. Once you get into Woodbridge, that price range could be a bit dicey. Definitely not doable (SFH) in Lorton.

Fredericksburg would probably be tougher since you have to fight traffic on I95/Route 1. Manassas would be easier utilizing 234 or Route 619.

Stafford would be a pretty good bet (North of Fredericksburg and literally right next to Quantico) Plenty of affordable SFH in your price range and many pleasant neighborhoods. For 275k, you could definitely get a nice place. Woodbridge might work, but for your price range many of the homes might be older or need work.

Manassas is hit or miss with neighborhoods but I think it would be far and traffic might be a troublesome.

We recently bought in Triangle. My DH works at Belvoir but we are only 5 minutes from Quantico's main gate. Our house is in a new subdivision and I like our neighborhood. We also looked at many in North Stafford which would be a good option for you.

For a Single family look at Park Ridge in Stafford newer homes, established community with amenities and still in your price range but at the top end. Also Widewater Villiage just down Rt 1 from Quantico might alos be a place where your budget could still afford a single family. Both are easy commutes to Quantico.

Stafford is an easy commute to Quantico. There are many planned communities that would give the sense of community you are looking for.

Here is my photo tour of Stafford.
