Hey all....

Well, I am moving up this way in August. Trying to find a decent area in Wilkes-Barre. My family and I have found a few houses there that we like (have not gone to see any of them yet, though), but we're not too sure of the area. The one we really like is on Alexander St in Wilkes-Barre (18702) if that helps.

Any comments on that area?
Thanks!! -Jen

Jen,

I know where your talking about for the most part, and personally think the area is A-OK although some on this forum will warn you about drug dealers and shootings, but in all reality its not that serious.. Its not comparable to crime in Phoenix.

I will forewarn you however, that your right near Carey Ave, and only a few blocks away from a Highschool. You'll have a ton of kids walking your street every day, and traffic from parents, students and school buses to boot.

What are you looking for in your neighbor hood. I live in the East End now, and am very happy with it. The Houses are real close to each other, but, naturally thats not for everyone.

Let us know and maybe we can help you out a little more :-P

What are you looking for exactly? Alexander st. is in South Wilkes-Barre off of Carey ave. that is not the best neighborhood to be honest with you. You should do a little more research. South Wilkes-Barre is hit and miss, and is known as the city's most high crime neighborhood, but like I said, it is hit and miss. Some streets are bad, others are not bad. I know that Carey ave is shady, but I don't know about Alexander street itself. All I know is that Alexander runs off of Carey ave. I would visit, and talk to some of the neighbors that live on that street. Get thier opinion.

My top recommendations for city neighborhoods would be Parsons or Miners Mills (both north of Route 309/Cross Valley Expressway), the Downtown Historic District (adjacent to Wilkes University), the East End (over near Home Depot where MovingOutofNJ lives), or parts of The Heights (although be careful here as well). SOME South Wilkes-Barre neighborhoods are quiet and pleasant, but it's pretty easy to go from a good block to a bad block in a hurry with the notorious drug activity in that end of town.

I agree on the the opinion that South W-B is hit and miss. I live close to the high school as well, but my street is quiet for the most part. Aside from the crazy redneck neighbor, it's been most of the same families on the street for longer than I can remember. Really no major problems in while. Nothing more than most other areas deal with like petty vandalism once in a while.

Relatives lived on Lawrence Street, and this neighborhood is still intact & not too bad. The lower side of Carey Ave past the Stadium towards Hanover is still relatively nice. Lawrence, Horton, Dagobert St., etc. Try this area of South WB. Alexander St. borders a pretty rough neighborhood. It isn't like the Bronx, but petty crimes & drug dealers do exist in this area. Keep looking, try www.trulia.com for your search efforts, a nice website for real estate.

Gotta give my area a thumbs up.

Check out Mayflower and the Heights. The area is about 1 mile from the area you are searching, just look on the map northeast.
