Hey guys, I am looking to buy my first car. I am not too sure where to look, I looked on thepapershop.com but i can't get the numbers unless i purchase a subscription. Are there any dealers locally that are afford for a first car? I was thinking around $3,000 for my first car as a max. Anyone have any ideas or know someone selling a car?

Thanks
John

How soon would you be in the market to buy? Immediately? I've been getting the "itch" to sell my 1999 Ford Contour with 98,000 miles in good condition. According to Kelly Blue Book, the private party sales value for it would be $2,330. It's been a very reliable, pleasant car to drive, but I'm at the point now where everyone I know has a newer vehicle and I feel left in the dust. I'm considering buying a newer pre-owned Mazda3 myself. I'm not 100% definite that I'm going to be selling this in the near-future, but if you'd be interested, here's a photo of a similar model:

I wouldn't mind a contour, but at the moment I wouldn't be able afford the car from a private seller, but if it was a dealer I could (loans/cc). But keep me updated if you decide on selling it.

I see you live in Honesdale, by the way, so your best bet would be to head down into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area and stop at some smaller local lots. Two of the most densely-congregated stretches of pre-owned car lots are the Montage Auto Mile along U.S. Route 11 (Birney Avenue) in Moosic, as well as Wyoming Avenue (also U.S. Route 11) between Exeter and Larksville. I bought my Ford from Gateway Motors along the avenue in Larksville, and I've been very happy with my purchase.

There are several car dealerships in Honesdale that sell used and most are listed on their websites. Here's a link to a listing:

You got a bank account? Talk to them first about an auto loan, see what they tell you. secondly, research and be ready to walk away from any car dealer if they don't treat you right. how is your credit?

You don't need to buy a subscription to the paper shop, just buy a hard copy pretty much anywhere for 90 cents. Cars on a lot are more expensive for the reason you mentioned (financing) plus the fact the dealer needs to purchase, service, and sit on the cars in question, and still make a profit in the end. If you can't swing a couple grand for a cheap beater, then I am unsure if you could get a loan on your own to begin with, at least not without a co-signer. Credit cards for a vehicle purchase is just plain stupid, unless you're doing some sort of balance transfer/trickery, but in the end if you don't have the cash you probably shouldn't do it.
