I just saw an
outrageous story on WNEP detailing how only 28 of the 300 businesses in the borough, or fewer than 10%, gave to the Dickson City Fire Department's annual fundraising drive with many of those being independent small businesses. Meanwhile 40% of residents in town regularly contribute (which is still far too low, but much better). According to the story the vast majority of calls for the fire department come in from the chain commercial districts for false alarms and car accidents while those same areas contribute the least.
The segment also mentioned that some businesses sent back letters saying they couldn't donate because they are overseen by larger corporations. Here's yet another prime example of just how little big-box chain stores contribute to our community. Not only do they bring mostly low-wage jobs, increase traffic congestion, and decimate downtowns, but now they also skimp on helping public safety as well.
Still think Dickson City is the promised land?
