Oy vey.

Everything in my house is breaking down at once.

Dishwasher sounds like a cat being tortured. Washer and dryer will need replacing in the next couple of months. And the gas stove has been limping along for far too long, with a broken handle, non-working electronic ignition and broken self-cleaning function.

All are 14 years old and due for replacement at this point anyway.

Looking at options, there is Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, Stroud Appliance & TV, and Ralphs in my local area. (Stroudsburg/Eastburg)

Suggestions? Brands to avoid?

Thanks much.

I've always preferred Lowes over Home Depot since Lowes has employee's that actually know what they're talking about and now they stock LG appliances...before they did we got all our kitchen appliances from HHGregg in Allentown...I wouldn't recommend buying anything from Best Buy because they're service policy leave a lot to be desired...for example we bought a 26" flat-screen with built-in DVD player...like 4-5 months later the DVD player stopped working and they refused to do anything about it...it was an Insignia which is their own brand...they said I had to return it 5 times before it could be declared a lemon...that was back in 2008 and haven't gone back yet...we spent $5K on new kitchen appliances with HHGregg and haven't had a problem with the appliances or with their service department either...we called for service on our washer/dryer that we got from them 2 years ago and they were very helpful and sent a service technician from A&E Repair Service...problem solved and at no cost to us...the kitchen appliances we bought all at once during Black Friday sales last year...

In terms of brands, LG, GE, Whirlpool, Bosch, Kenmore. Can't go wrong with either of them. I have a GE Profile. No problems. Kenmore is highly rated. Lowe's and Sears would be my go-to choices. Heard great things about HHGregg as well. Maybe you could wait until July 4th sales. Dishes won't be half as high

Best Buy has good prices and interest-free financing, but their delivery department is horrible. We've bought 3 appliances from them over the years and twice they screwed up the delivery!

We bought our dryer from Sears because after waiting around for the Best Buy truck on what we thought was Delivery Day, we found they had actually scheduled delivery for 5 months down the road!

Just bought a window air conditioner from Stroud Appliance, first time we've ever bought from them, and they seem like a decent outfit.

We got our electic double-oven range from Lowe's, made in Canada by Frigidaire, and later found that the wiring was backwards. Put it on bake, and it's in broiler mode, turn on the broiler, and it was in bake mode. It was a simple fix but mind boggling how they can cross wires like that.

Whoever you call, I would check on whether delivery and hauling away the old unit is free.

I can also recommend Barry from B&L Appliance Repair. He's come out a number of times to fix various appliances for us, and he's very knowledgable and reasonble.

I doubt they deliver cheaply that far but as general info, we have had good results with two Scranton area local appliance places. Shehadi Appliance in Throop and Dunmore Appliance in...uh...Dunmore.

Google will get you their numbers etc. I am not sure if Shehadi's even has a web site...but we have done business with them satisfactorily a few times recently, even after looking at the big box stores. True personal service at competitive prices...and excellent delivery service.

Even if they don't work for you Scranton nearer people can check 'em out when needed...and maybe there are similar 'old style' local appliance businesses there. I see mention of Stroud appliances...others?

We used to deal with J.L. Williams in Stroudsburg but they closed the store when the father retired. The son still does repairs and possibly sales, out of his house on Franklin Hill Road in Eastburg.

Who said you had to wait till Black Friday?? You can check their website online...they're always having deals...their Memorial Day sale has been extended till June 1st...so you may want to check them out...they're located right behind the Lehigh Valley Mall...

Just throwing in my two cents: If you had an honorable discharge from the military, or your relation or friends and they have military ID (card or DD 214 form); you can get a ten percent discount from Lowe's or Home Depot. Sometimes they will question the discount – but they usually make good. They will not give you the military discount on top of other discounts.

We have had a very good experience with Lowe's delivering and installing new major appliances - at least the store in Bartonsville. We have not tried the newer store in Mt. Pocono for appliances. But; it all depends on what you want – Lowe's might not have the brand name your looking for.

Make sure, whatever brand you buy, that you check with your utility company. Many of them are offering a buy back rebate if you purchase an appliance with a good Energy Star rating. I know for a fridge they give you $35.00 AND they'll pick up your old one.
