Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a relatively decent place to live in the Tobyhanna Area.... I am looking for something that is relatively cheap in property taxes and something in the mid to high 100's. May be moving from Northern VA to a job @ Tobbyhana Army Depot. Any info. that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Also I am married and have a 3 yr. old daughter.
Thanx,
Gary White

Hello there!

If you're going to be working at Tobyhanna, then you could live pretty much anywhere in NEPA. The Depot employs well over 5,000 people, many of whom carpool to work from various locations. My brother-in-law works there as an electrical engineer, and he commutes with a carpool van from Pittston.

If you wanted to live as close as possible to the facility, then I think the communities of Pocono Farms and Pocono Farms-East would be good options, as both are right in Tobyhanna. Steer clear of A Pocono Country Place, a gated community in Tobyhanna that is home to 10,000 people, as crimes are frequently-reported there.

Another area I wholeheartedly recommend (even though it might stretch your budget a bit), would be the North Pocono School District, which is consistently-ranked as one of the best in NEPA. Some towns here include Moscow, Elmhurst, Daleville, Mt. Cobb, Spring Brook, Roaring Brook, and Thornhurst. Speaking of Thornhurst, there is a community there known as Thornhurst Country Club Estates (TCCE), that is home to a lot of reasonably-priced Chalet-style homes, most with three bedrooms and 1.5 or 2 baths, and most priced in the mid-$100k range. That community is popular for people from New York City and North Jersey who utilize properties there as vacation homes. The entire North Pocono School District is starting to become a bit steep in price, but you might be able to find a few bargains here and there.

Best of luck to you, and welcome in advance to NEPA!

Michelle_daddy: What type of area do you want to live in - city, rural, development? What type of hobbies and activities do you and your wife enjoy? How much of a commute would you want to have to work?

There are many houses in this general area in your price range, but it's more than just finding the house.

Pocono Farms is about 5-10 minutes from the Depot. It is the nicest area within 20 or 30 minutes of the depot. We had our newer 4 bedroom 3 bath home on the market there. But we decided to rent when we found out about the foreclosed home with an identical floor plan that was just around the corner from us. It recently sold for $165,000. We had listed our home at $269,000 a year ago. Pocono Farms (West) is the side of the development that has the golf course and pool, as well as other amenities. A friend of mine was disappointed to find out that Pocono Farms East didn't enjoy access to those things. We had terrific neighbors and a beautiful environment. We also felt safe there. You may notice that there isn't a huge presence of obvious security there. Guess what? That is because there hasn't needed to be.
We were 15 minutes from the outlet mall and I-80, and 5 minutes from SuperWalmart. Thirty minutes from both Scranton and Stroudsburg.

We loved it there. Good Luck to you. I hope you find the best possible place for your family.

I like Pocono Farms. It won me over when I drove through one evening shortly after an ice storm and saw a number of families out taking walks. I also like the variety of homes -- big and small, new and older, a mix of styles... It has a real neighborhood feel.
