Okay, this may be a stupid question, but I have never seen storm doors before or really paid attention to them when I traveled to other states. Are they important? It seems like the large majority of my neighborhood has them. I researched them on the internet and it appears they are mostly to save on energy costs. Do they help that much? Should we get one?

They also protect the front door from (some) weather damage. Most styles today seem to be of the kind that are full-length glass.

I'm a bit boggled that there are places where people don't have them You mean when someone knocks on the door, you open it and they are just there? Zounds I can't imagine what an encounter with those door-to-door Jeezus preachers would be like if I didn't have a barrier between me and them when I opened the door.

LOL, I really did laugh out loud at this. I couldn't imagine it either. 'Course, I rarely answer my door anyway.

Well, maybe that is why we didn't have them in SoCal! We rarely had any of those "door-to-door Jeezus preachers" coming by. I guess we would get some every now and then and we would just have to brave them face to face. All I have ever really seen in SoCal are screendoors or iron security gates and bars over windows. So, do we get a stormdoor or not? Are Jesus preachers more tempted by nonstorm doors knowing we are an easy victim????

I don't have a storm door...and yes who is ever at the door I am bound to be face to face with them (I do have a peep hole and windows on each side of the door to look prior to opening though). My hardest thing to get use to was not having a screen door (no one has them out here). What about cross breeze ventilation? (can't get that with a storm door). As it was I had one put on my back door to our deck and I love it!

I would just yell out through my screen window, as i sat on my recliner, that i was not interested, thank you. The preachers would move on.

Just a reminder...if you have a steel front door you may not be able to use a storm door. The sun shinning on it builds up too much heat and it may warp. Another fact ...75% of front doors sold today are fiberglass, 20% are made of steel and the remaining 5% are good old fashioned wood.Authority of my lumber yard when I purchased my front door.

I can't imagine not having one. Due to our work hours, we keep the front porch light burning. About 8 months out of the year, I'm met by a blizzard of bugs at the front door and don't want them following me inside. If you look around at Lowes or Home Depot you should be able to find the kind where the glass can be switched out for a screen at the times of the year when you want a breeze blowing thru. At least you rarely see the tacky kind of my parent's day: those ugly aluminum styles that had the squirrely-q design in the middle with the owner's initial festooned in the center of the design.

The d2d preachers aren't the nuisance they used to be; least not around our area. At one time they were as annoying as the monthly cycle women have to endure (told that to Dh. he cackled and forever after announced their arrival with "hey honey! Aunt Flo is here!" )

Maybe I just have personal boundary issues. I'd find it unnerving to open my front door to a stranger and have them just inches away with no barrier between them and entry to my house

Well, my door looks like wood and isn't painted, so I imagine it is . Good information! I had to buy a screendoor for our backdoor because I can't handle the idea of being closed in without opening doors or windows. I don't have any screens on my windows either. I would imagine there are times during the year when you can open your windows. I saw those stormdoors with the screens, but they were so much more than a regular screen door, hence my original question. I am trying to get down to just the necessities now that we have been on a spending frenzy at Home Depot and Lowes. The guys at the store were not very helpful and pretty much said it is a personal decision.

You guys would hate it here in south Florida. Not only do we not have storm or screen doors, but since hurricane Andrew blew through here, all new homes must have front doors that open out-not in. Andrew blew in so many doors that compromised the rest of the house now they must open out. That makes it so much fun to answer the door and know someone can just pull it open. I hate it. At least with the door opening in, you can kind of block it with your body and perhaps protect yourself. Okay so last year when Wilma hit, I was glad the door opened out. But that was for about 10 hours. After that, I still hate it.
