Nope. Lemon law only applies to new cars. Did you have someone check it out when you bought it? You should have done due diligence if you did not.

Should This Have Passed Nc Inspection.
Nope. Used cars are buyer beware (as it is in all states).

Too bad that NC doesn't have a meaningful mechanical inspection law;
you know, something that is done at the time of sale/transfer to actually protect consumers.

There are some states that require smog to be passed prior to title transfer. If you buy a used car from a dealer, that's fine.

But the problem this creates is that if you buy it from an individual without passing the smog first and hand over the money, then you can't transfer the title if it doesn't pass smog. Of course the seller is supposed to cover any repairs which are required in order to pass smog but collecting from an individual is such a pain it's not worth it!!

This isn't about emissions tests.

This is about **expecting** a wheels off thorough safety inspection...
at the time of sale to a NC citizen... when it matters to that buyer.

NC doesn't do that now.
NC doesn't do a meaningful safety inspection at any point.

We are about to go through our first inspections since moving here...how long do the inspections take approximately? Apologies for bumping an old topic, but I thought this question didn't need its own.

If you keep up with your car maintenance such that no **glaring** deficiencies are present...
the cursory inspection process will last about 20 minutes.
Most of that time is required only because of the slow internet connection to the state computer
