We're moving to Michigan. We have a car in NC that we're selling (NC title). Since we'll be out of state, my father is going to sell the car for us, but NC requires both seller and buyer to be present to have their signatures notorized (ridiculous, but okay).

Question: What would be the best way to give my father authorization to sell the car for us? limited POA?

Signing it over to him won't work since he'd have to pay all of the registration fees again and wait for a new title (about a month). We've got interested buyers, but time has run out and we have to move.

Thanks for you help!

Your local tag office, (not the DMV) is where you should start. Can't speak for these offices throughout the state, but the office here is very helpful and will explain what can and cannot be done, and how to go about it. Again these are not DMV employees, but a contractor.

Give them a call.

I think this notary thing is a real pain in the a$$. We sold a sailboat last year for about $2,500. The guy who bought it came down from another part of the state, and it was after dinner on a Friday, so we had to call around and then run around to meet up with a notary to get it done.

I have had it done at the tag office, also. If you can get it done during normal business hours, that's probably your best bet.
