Although I have no reason to support annual inspections as they are a revenue source rather than ensuring safety, the sticker did provide a visual reminder for the vehicle owner AS WELL AS a quick an easy enforcement tool for your inquiring LEO. Now they'll have to physically run the tag on each car they check to see if the inspection is up to date.
In that case, you have to wonder if the state will step in with automatic fines for being overdue on inspection? What a paperwork SNAFU that will be.

When you get it inspected the place doing the inspection enters it in the computer.

Believe me, they will know if you got it done and will block your registration. Yes an officer will have to run your tag to know but how is that so different than the sticker? It's not like cops could see the date on your sticker to know if it was good or not. The only change is no sticker and the reminder will be on your registration and they will both be due around the same time.
