Something I have found interesting in NC is the advancement of Charter Schools. They are virtually non-existent in VA and other states. I found they are often listed as public schools, but often have the advantages of private schools.
They are regular public schools that have a "specialty" subject.... some excell in reading and writing, some in science.... although they are public schools that some kids do just get naturaly assigned to, children who aren't assigned can still apply to go there. But I believe they have to live in the same school dstrict. They tend to make schools in bad areas of town the magnet schools so they can get kids from nicer areas to go there.
