Metropolitan Statistical Area rankings in NC...

1) Charlotte (#23 nationally-2.66 mill)
2) Raleigh (#42 nationally-1.41 mill)
3) Greensboro (#76 nationally-776k)
4) Winston-Salem (#88 nationally-675k)
5) Durham (#92 nationally-650k)
6) Fayetteville (#108 nationally-520K)
7) Asheville (#120 nationally-469k)
8) Hickory (#149 nationally-365k)
9) Wilmington (#173 nationally-286K)
10) Jacksonville (#221 nationally-204K)
11) Burlington (#251 nationally-171K)
12) Greenville (#254 nationally-170k)

If Brunswick Co is added to Wilmington, it would move up to about #130 nationally at about 422K. Myrtle Beach would drop from #114 nationally to #151.

Interesting...Greenville is about 7k under estimates, Wilmington is about 8k under estimates...

Does that have to do with this?...(before you answer consider Chapel Hill was about 4K below estimates).

That list definitely underscores how NC is a state of small towns mostly with a few notable exceptions.

That very well could've been a factor.

What really stands out to me from this census is just how badly Eastern North Carolina is hurting. From I-95 until you get to the coastal counties, the only counties posting positive growth are Camden, which is near the Outer Banks, and Pitt, which is home to Greenville and East Carolina University. And even the growth for both (3.8% and 1.2% respectively) isn't impressive. Concord and Asheville grew so much faster that Greenville got knocked out of the top 10 cities even though it grew 3.5%. Beside Greenville, the only other eastern NC municipality in the top 50 was New Bern, with an impressive 6% growth to 31,291.

Maybe I should amend this to include the northern stretch of I-95 as well as a loser. Northampton, Halifax, Nash and Wilson also shrank considerably these last 10 years.

Nash barely lost anything.

I thought Nash would gain a bit.
