I am going to driving up the end of July with my teenage daughter from Florida to NJ. After researching on google for fun, funky or interesting places to stop and do something, I don't see very much. What would you recommend within 30 miles of I-95?
There's a huge Rooms to Go distribution center that just opened on Exit 77 in Dunn that includes a kid's furniture store, which might be a treat. And the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield off Exit 93 is a pretty interesting collection of the screen star's memorabilia. Otherwise, it's pretty slim pickings, although I've mainly traveled on just the parts from Exit 81 (I-40 interchange) down to South Carolina.
South of the Border at the NC/SC Border is quirky & interesting...nice stop to stretch your legs. You'll pass Kings Dominion Amusement Park on I-95 in Virginia. Of course, you could take a detour through DC, stop along the battlefields along I-95 in Va.
We have made this trip many times, but we usually just drive straight through. I have heard iffy things about South of the Border. Looks very touristy. We are avoiding the DC area by driving over to I-81. We have taken stops over to do some of the museums in DC. We haven't stopped at the Kings Dominion. I will look into that one.
I don't know if my teenager would want to stop and take a look at Ava Gardner memorabilia since she probably has no idea who she is. Something to consider though. Any suggestions for I-81 since we may be heading over that way?
Oh, I got this one...In SC and NC where it is only two lanes, get in and stay in the left lane and drive 10 mph below the speed limit. It makes it easier to read the billboards that way.
Actually, please disregard everything I said. Please.
95 in NC is a real drag. Maybe take it all the way through NC and stop in Richmond, check out the Civil War Museum and Confederate White House. Very interesting. Exit 74C off 95N in VA
