SPINOFF THREAD: What's your top 5 most delightfully quaint, small town downtowns in NC? (Fayetteville: hotels, architecture)

HN: Mt. Airy, Elkin, Morehead City (I like the longer stretches of flat land for biking, and the backdrop is nice with the IC Waterway)... Fayetteville (Doesn't technically qualify as "small town" per se to us, but I like the layout. I like the potential. It's spacious. Has a mixed use unit. Again, so much potential. I liked it. Sue me.)
Washington has a very picturesque downtown. Tons of architecture. Some good legit small businesses and a beautiful riverfront setting that is very walkable.
I think New Bern was NC's state capital at one time. That alone makes it worth a visit.
