fayetteville is a wonderful place to live especially for a northerner who does not want the culture shock of moving down south because we have the most diverse population due to the military
Personally, the only way i would stay in Fayetteville is if I was gonna use it as a stepping stone to a better job down the line. Assuming thats what you're trying to do it wouldn't be a bad move. You said that you would be getting paid more than what you would be in Raleigh so thats a plus. Also I'm pretty sure it would be a little cheaper to stay in Fayetteville since Raleigh is definitely booming right now and has been for the last few years.
I have lived in Fayetteville all my life and it is a wonderful place to live. However, when I want a change of scenary I go to Raleigh. I live on the north side of Fay. so it's easy to hit 295 to I40. If your pay is worth the sacrifice than I say go for it. You call always to travel to Raleigh anytime. Also there are smaller cities between Raleigh and Fay. that you might consider. Hope this helps.
I am from Pittsburgh and have been in Fayetteville for 4 years. I am married with three kids so cannot comment too much on the nightlife but have to say that although I am looking forward to moving back to PA, Fayetteville is not that bad. I would say 3 years is very doable especially if you are single and can take advantage of the great areas around Fayetteville on the weekends...the mountains, the beaches, Raleigh, etc. If the pay is that much better it will be worth it. Downtown has some great little bar/restaurants. It is all what you make of it. I have met some really great people here. Yes, there are negatives and some run down areas but you will have that in every city, including Pittsburgh. The shopping does stink here but you have all the shopping you could want in Raleigh. The main reason that I am anxious to leave is the shools and lack of things to do with the kids. Like I said, if you are single and not worrying about that then it would be fine. It really is central to so many great areas in NC. Good Luck!

Get a copy of the Parks & Recreation's fall 2010 schedule and you'll find PLENTY to do with the children! You'll be AMAZED what all is out there to do with them!!
The advantages is a higher paid salary will get u a lot more real estate than if it was Raleigh. But there aren't a whole lot of good places to spend that high pay salary. But if u are talking about three years, I would do it. Having a BIG savings account will allow you to be more selective in the future. I'm talking about preferable locations and jobs.
