I'm planning a trip next year to NC-what are the best places to visit to get the most out of our stay? we're thinking of visiting for about 4 days.
We moved here and have called North Carolina home for almost 11 years now. We have seen about 75% of the state and still have not found a place that is not, at the very least, quaint and picturesque! I too agree that you should plan to see the western end or the eastern end as you can't do all that in 4 days. We visited NC 3 separate times, for a week at a time, before we got the "feel" of the state. We did the coastal area, then the mountains and then the middle of the state. Once we moved here we spent almost every weekend and all of our vacation time exploring this gorgeous state. Of all the southern states we think that NC is the most progressive and the most beautiful (with Virginia a close second). Don't forget to try the barbecue, as you can find red sauce as well as white (vinegar based) and enjoy the unique country cookin'.
Sunny, Silverwing, Hapalee thanks so much for the wonderful responses (pics and map) Walidm-I'm thinking of visiting the National Park, Charlotte and maybe R/D area...I agree 4 days will not be enough, if we like it we're planning to visit again
I'm looking forward to the Smokey Mountain NP, I live near Yosemite here in California and that's some beauty for you!
Blowing Rock, Boone, Grandfather Mountain and Little Switzerland u have to look it up online then call for direction but it is the nicest place we ever stayed at the top of the mountain right of the Blue Ridge Parkway u can jump on the parkway and follow it from Blowing rock stright to Little Switzerland and jus be wowed the whole time and if u can hike a few miles some r closer than others but go see some waterfalls crabtree falls is breath taking but about 3 mile round trip and kinda tough at the end..And u cant forget the mile high swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain...

The NC mountains are worth a visit. Biltmore Estates, Blur Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock, Railroad ride, Whitewater rafting. The outer banks are also good to visit if you are seeking a quiet, peaceful time at the beach.
