So basically I want to live somewhere that is about an hour and a half to a beach. Great education system and high paying jobs.

Dream on. An hour and a half to the beach is out in the middle of farm country. Kinston, Fayetteville and Greenvile are about that distance, so please read about these communities and see if your job skills would fit into available jobs in these areas.

About the only kind of high-paying jobs would be as a college professor at the medical school in Greenville, or a business executive able at one of the larger corporations.

If you're looking for a high paying job, great schools, and within 1.5 hours to the beach, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, and Mass. all come to mind.

To clarify, the average annual salaries in these cities is below the state average, and the unemployment rates are high. Even Wilmington salaries are below the state average.

If you want great schools and high-paying jobs in North Carolina, you should look at the Triangle. But you will have to bite the bullet and drive 3 to 3.5 hours to the beach. That's just the reality: the most developed part of the state is in the center.

Where your high paid salary will go out of your pocket in real estate and income taxes!

Why have you limited it to NC? You should find a city that suits you and not worry about what state it's in. We don't really have anywhere that meets your criteria, since the area near the coast in NC is rural and poor.
Nowhere within 1.5 hours to the beach has either great education or high-paying jobs.

You might look into Richmond, VA, which is close to the Virgina beaches, or Charleston, SC.

There is no place as you describe in NC. I recommend the Boston area.

Depends on what "high paying jobs".

Greenville fits the bill, it has a great University and Community College and if you are in either education or medical you can have a high paying job.

Same thing for Wilmington, with UNCW and Cape Fear Comm College, and you can add a few other large industries like GE, Corning, and PPD to the mix...and Wilmington is closer than an hour and a half to the beach.

Focus on those 2.

If you are an engineer, New Bern might fit you bill, but its only 45 minutes to the beach.

You can move your children to great schools in Craven County, and if MCAS or the rework facility is hiring, there are lots of well paying jogs there...if they are hiring.

Other than that I guess Wilmington, for jobs, but don't know about public schools there.
