Voters in 26 counties will be deciding on new taxes on Tuesday, November 6th.
When the General Assembly passed a new budget in July, it included two local-option revenues for counties – a quarter-cent sales tax increase or a 0.4 percent land transfer tax. A county can only enact one option, and whichever option a county chooses must first be approved by the public in a referendum.
Ten counties voting on the land transfer tax, Brunswick, Chatham, Gates, Henderson, Hoke, Macon, Moore, Pender, Swain and Union.
Eleven counties are voting on the sales tax option — Catawba, Columbus, Cumberland, Greene, Hertford, Lenoir, Martin, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson and Surry.
Five counties (Davie, Graham, Harnett, Johnston and Rutherford) are voting on both options.

Give Davie County a cause and they'll fight over it Schools, taxes, hospitals ... all are/have been the subject of squabbles.
The land transfer tax has vociferous opposition; signs are all over. If money has to be raised, popular opinion seems to be swayed toward a higher sales tax.
County commissioners in these counties are already busy figuring out how to wrangle another tax increase without approval of voters.
