Voters in 26 counties will be deciding on new taxes on Tuesday, November 6th.

When the General Assembly passed a new budget in July, it included two local-option revenues for counties – a quarter-cent sales tax increase or a 0.4 percent land transfer tax. A county can only enact one option, and whichever option a county chooses must first be approved by the public in a referendum.

Ten counties voting on the land transfer tax, Brunswick, Chatham, Gates, Henderson, Hoke, Macon, Moore, Pender, Swain and Union.

Eleven counties are voting on the sales tax option — Catawba, Columbus, Cumberland, Greene, Hertford, Lenoir, Martin, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson and Surry.

Five counties (Davie, Graham, Harnett, Johnston and Rutherford) are voting on both options.

Give Davie County a cause and they'll fight over it Schools, taxes, hospitals ... all are/have been the subject of squabbles.

The land transfer tax has vociferous opposition; signs are all over. If money has to be raised, popular opinion seems to be swayed toward a higher sales tax.

Meck voted against the repeal by more than 2-1; the transit tax stays. Only obstacle now is new politicians in Huntersville (n. meck).

County commissioners in these counties are already busy figuring out how to wrangle another tax increase without approval of voters.
