I had looked at the town of Belmont in my search previous to posting on this site and had already ruled it out. It's the right size and has everything I need close by but the crime rate was too high and it's way too close to Charlotte which is a huge town. I'm really looking for a largish small town in a rural area like where I live now. I'm starting to think that I'm not going to find what I'm looking for in North Carolina because I'm being so picky but the place I'm coming from is so perfect for what I want and need (except the ability for my husband to get a job) that it might ruin it for any other town. Here is the link to my home town in case anyone wants to get a feel for what I'm looking for: Petoskey, Michigan (MI) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
The only thing I would change about Petoskey, the town I currently live in, is the difficulty of getting a teaching job within driving distance and Jan-March (not enough sunshine and a bit too cold for my tastes). If my husband could get a job I'd stay dispite the 3 bad months. It's a beautiful, well kept town right on the shore of Lake Michigan with a busy historic downtown with excellent schools and very low crime. You can leave your home and car unlocked without fear of your things being stolen. I was hoping to find something similar in North Carolina.
I'd still appreciate any suggestions if anyone has any more. Thanks!
Well, from everything you've saidm you mustn't rule out Waynesville. It is the right size, has cultural amenities, history, arts--its community theater was cited by the Washington Post recently as a reason to move there. The place seems to be sincere, it is located right in the mountains with 6 peaks over 6000 feet, the highest east of the Mississippi, so camping, outdoor activities and such are readily available. All of the stores you could need are there in an area apart from the town, but in the town there are galleries, some truly excellent restaurants, things for the kids to do. It's pretty close to perfect and about 30 minutes average from Asheville which is called, with some reason, the Paris of the South, a small city of 73,000, the Biltmore Estate, French restaurants and bakeries.
Definitely worth another look.
Hey, we just got SQUIRT down here! No longer do you have to bring your Vernors, either. But, you'll be hard pressed to find the ring bologna and the nationally recognized high standards for processed meats that Michigan is known for.
This is the Bible belt, so if you like a glass of wine with your dinner, you may not find it in all small towns.
Best wishes in your search. You'll find North Carolina to be one of the prettiest states of all! My family is from MI - so I've had my share of dirty snow sludge.
I moved here from elk point,sd with my husband who is from swannanoa,nc. Elk point has such a "community" feel, very patriotic, historical, parks and bike trails everywhere, small beautiful little school! It is like nowhere i have ever lived before which leaves me searching for my "elk point" here in wnc. Any suggestions?
