May work in Sanford, where to live?? (Charlotte, Raleigh: crime, schools)

I am considering a job offer in Sanford, NC. Is that a good place to live, or where else should I consider? I don't mind some commute.

I have some friends that live in the Sanford community of Carolina Trace and are very pleased with it. The summertime heat is too much for me, but they don't mind it. REMOVED

Are there areas there that don't have the heat as much? I wouldn't mind commuting some to live in a cooler area. I don't know much about the area.

No, you'd have to be in the Western part (mountains or foothills) of the state to escape the summertime heat and humidity.

Summertime heat is relative to where you are coming from and what climate you are comfortable with. People moving to the area from Florida complain its too cold, people from Vermont think its too hot. Our summers here are pretty mind I think (I'm from Texas and NY) check out City-Datas info on the Raleigh, NC area. Sanford is only 15 min south so the climate is not that different.

True, if you don't mind 90+ temps and the associated humidity during the summer months, you'll be fine. According to the National Weather Service, the area had 68 days of temps in the 90s or above during the months of June through September 2005.

Yes some years vary from the norm, but this is 30 year average trending statistics. It's a beautiful 71 degrees right now.

The state climate Office gets their data from the Feds in areas where the Feds have a Primary Local Climatological Data Site (LCD); Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Lumberton, Cape Hatteras and Elizabeth City. Fayetteville is normally the state's hottest spot. I don't know why the NWS would have a LCD in my old hometown of Lumberton, considering it is only 20 miles south of the other station at the Fayetteville Airport on I-95.

Run far from Sanford!!!!..We just moved from there to Ohio..The town can be deceiving from first glance..Looks like it is so nice and has the small town charm...The crime is high...Unless you don't particularly like your valuables-then it may not seem so bad....Almost every day, the newspaper is filled with arrests and court records....Schools suck and the heat and humidity is awful!!...Winter consists of ice storms....Rarely snow...Forgot to mention hurricanes...Yes, you can get lots of hurricane damage that far inland..We know from Hurricane Fran...July and August are so hot..In the 90's (once in a while it hits 99 or 100)with 1,000,000,000% humidity...heat index can get up to 105 or so....Our air conditioning could never keep up with it and we still had the almost $200/month electric bills....Most people there are uppity (whether they have money or a trailer!)..Gangs and drugs-crack and crystal meth- are unbelievable..Not to mention the tons of illegal immigrants....and, hookers in downtown ....Most jobs require fluent Spanish... Trust me when I say, "do not be fooled"....IF I HAD to move back to NC-I would recommend Wilmington on the coast or Sylva (a small town in the mountains)....Carolina Trace, referred to above, is a gated community of mostly older retirees from the North.....Some people really seem to love Sanford...It's just not the environment I want to live in or raise my kids ....Goodluck in whatever you choose!!....
