I lived 12 miles from Pembroke for 8 years. Pembroke is the university (UNC-P) surrounded by flat, open farm land and not much else. A very small poor rural town of 2,400 that's around 82% American Indian. Summers are brutal in Robeson County.

Robeson County, NC is the tribal home of the Lumbee, the largest non-federally-recognized Native American tribe in America. There's literally no way to separate the Lumbee and Robeson County, as the two are intertwined and Lumbee far outnumber all other races and ethnic groups in the area. It would help to research the Lumbee before even moving into Robeson County, as the county is informally run by them (the state of North Carolina recognizes the Lumbee as a Native tribe and gives them more-or-less free reign over that area).

There is a tiny bit more diversity at UNC-P (which was Pembroke State University for many years), but beyond that, you are talking about a largely rural area with little solid industry that is primarily seen as Native land.

I'd commute from Lumberton. Many more basic amenities than found in Pembroke. Lumberton is around 21,000 with shopping centers, a hospital and related healthcare providers. Unlike Pembroke, the racial makeup of the city is 49% White, 35% Black & 13% American Indian. Lumberton is the largest city and also the county seat of Robeson County

Overall, Robeson County is 38% American Indian, 36% White and 25% Black.

Robeson County SUCKS!!!!!! You are right poor person above…..I did agree with you when you wrote….don't come to Pembroke until you have researched the fake tribe of Indians called Lumbees! That is why they are not recognized. Anyway...if you come to Pembroke looking any other way other than “Half Breed”, Lumbee’s are going to discriminate against you and make your life a living hell. And like the guy said...Lumbees run Pembroke and Robeson county...so if you think you are going to be able to go to the courts and have a fair trial for anything thing (discrimination, fraud, profiling, horrible customer service, small claims) you are sadly mistaken. Just a heads up on how crooked "Lumbees" are in Robeson County...The FED's had to get involved at the sheriff’s department and over have of the sheriffs were either put in prison or forced to resign! WARNING...Do not send your Child to UNCP, PEMBROKE NC, or any where in ROBESON COUNTY. This message is for all those not LUMBEE.
