There's a theory that people who view each others' profiles a lot, message each other a lot, like and comment a lot, are at or near the top of the friend lists, but I don't know if that's true. Keep in mind, your friends may have lists specifically picked out of people they want on their top nine friends or whatever.
Pretty sure that is random and coincides with who you have recently interacted with...
Yeah, after seeing this thread I went in a played a bit. Pretty much I stayed in the top half or bottom half, depending upon how much I've interacted but within the halves the order changed drastically every time I refreshed the page.
Why is this a concern of yours? It's not ranking of you worth or even of your friendship with the person.
+1. What difference does it make? If you are like the majority of users, you don't know most of your so called "friends" anyway, so why does their opinion matter? I don't understand the appeal of Facebook. Much of it consists of trivial posts about what so and so ate for breakfast, other posts are silly platitudes or information about family members of these friends you don't know, and the rest of the posts are religious in nature. Oh, and don't forget the overdose of ads. I deactivated my account after about five seconds.
I think its random. I have a "friend" who is only a friend because I wanted to send her a message without paying a dollar to do so. I haven't contacted her since. She is in my top 3.

I enjoy facebook.
messages to people who aren't friends go to their 'other' box. i've never seen an option to pay to send a message.
