why do people move back up north after moving down south? (New York: co-ops, restaurants)

Your description of South Carolina is similar to life out here in Arizona. We do recycle although we do not have to separate our trash. The recyclables are sorted at the facility where the trash is dumped. There are no deposits required on beverage containers either. Complete strangers wave to you on the streets. I'm happy to hear you appreciate your adopted home state in spite of political differences. South Carolina being a "Red" state. It doesn't sound like you are trying to force your agenda on others. That is commendable. Are you sure you are an old-time Yankee Liberal? I have found that the people out here are generally happy because they want to be here and not because they have to be here. Most including myself would not want to live anywhere else and are proud to live in Arizona. You see a lot of people with sweatshirts, tee-shirts, ball caps etc. and front license plates proudly displaying the state flag, name and colors. Something I rarely saw while living in New York other than baseball hats or apparel displaying New York sport's team logo's.
Oh yes, I'm a liberal, and my liberal roots as such go back to the 1600s in this country, and centuries before that in England. So despite loving it here down here, it's not likely I'll turn red any time soon. But thanks for the compliment anyway.
This is a wonderful place to live, with caring quirky fascinating people. And originally being from New England, I don't miss New York at all.
Do you understand that your preferences are not identical with everybody's preferences?
Of course I do and the last time I looked at the forum title, this is the New York forum. That's precisely why I don't post in other forums on here telling them I would never want to live where they live. And some of these places I HAVE lived in and wouldn't ever consider going back. But I haven't posted once there because I respect those that do choose to live there.

Just out of curiosity, did you do thorough research into the places you disliked before moving there?
