Eventhough it is bigger than 20k, maybe New Rochelle, which has Iona and the College of New Rochelle. Maybe Purchase would work as it has Manhattanville College and SUNY-Purchase. I was also thinking that New Paltz would work.
Thank you Blink and ckhthankgod– I will look into it. And yes, I was considering New Rochelle. But when I looked just north at Mamaroneck, the prices increased exponentially, making me suspicious at the reasonable prices in NR (crime? bad schools??) Am I wrong? Is NR a nice area and does it have good schools??
New Rochelle does not really meet any of the criteria that you set out. While it might technically have a college, it's no more of a college town than New York City. It's certainly not rural, nor does it have the hip-college-town feel. It's a suburban town leaning more towards the urban in some parts. Some of its neighborhoods are very nice, very upperclass. Other neighborhoods are much poorer, which leads many of the more affluent residents to avoid the public schools.
Not saying New Rochelle is a bad area. But it certainly does not fit with the criteria you laid out originally.
I'll second New Paltz. The area is quite rural, it is in the Hudson valley, very close to the Catskills and at the foot of the 'Gunks and it is within fairly easy striking distance of NYC as well.
PS THe reason we need to be near the city, other than the fact that it is ridiculously amazing, but we need to be near JFK since we travel back and forth to Europe often.
Although it is 3 hours from NYC I would suggest the Saratoga area. There is a train station, Albany airport is less than 45 minutes (you could fly into JFK for international flights). Skidmore College and Empire State College are in Saratoga Springs.
