We currently live on Long Island, when my wife retires next year we would like to move to a place that is a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive to Long Island. My wife has an incurable disease and might have to visit medical specialists in LI.

We want to rent a house (we have 2 dogs & 4 cats) that is near a good hospital and has a good selection of doctors in fairly close proximity. We would also like to be close to a major shopping center.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

So why leave LI?

It's too expensive here and after my wife retires we would have a tough time financially.

Where on LI do you need to be 2-2.5 hours from? Big difference between western Nassau and Eastern Suffolk.

Unfortunately you do have to get closer to 2 hrs away before your prices drop significantly. Housing prices and utilities drop a bit once you get into Duchess/Orange/Ulster Counties...but taxes are the same.

I recommend looking at the PA boards and asking about some of the northeastern towns. There are some really beautiful places east of Scranton and north of Allentown. East Stroudsburg is particularly nice.

Good luck and best wishes for the two of you!!

Alexi,

We have to be near New Hyde Park (Nassau Cty). We want to rent a house not buy one so taxes are not important.

I am also checking out PA.
