Sean, if you want to be the guinea pig who goes out west to visit and reports on Death Valley, be our guest! But unless you are an extreme biologist who likes to explore how life can survive in the most hostile environment in the United States, I think you will be disappointed. And when you are alone in the barren lifeless desert, dying of thirst, you will be saying "Oh! Woe is me! Why didn't I listen to LINative and visit the beautiful clean waters of Lake George instead of this god forsaken desert"!

Anyway, to move away from the Adirondacks, there is a place that New York turned over to the Federal Government, the Saratoga Battlefield.

Here's another,

Fort Stanwix National Monument - Fort Stanwix National Monument

They do a good job, the Park Service. When the kids were younger we'd watch Drums Along the Mohawk and visit the fort and the Herkimer Home. Good times.

What makes the ADKs unique and interesting to me besides the obvious natural beauty is their history, their unique preserve status which applies to private as well as state-owned lands, and incredible abundance of natural lakes.
