We just moved here and maybe it's because we haven't moved to a new state for so many years but it seems there are so many more regulations here. Getting a license: a SS CARD from the SS Administration. It has to be a card directly from the agency. In CA, you give them your NUMBER and they verify it when you come in.

When we registered our cars, we almost couldn't do it bc my passport isn't current. Six points of identification? The auto insurance people said, oh yeah, NY, they're sticklers for crazy details.

Is it like this for everything? And why?

Makes me want to look at NJ or CT. Are they the same? I'm not a detail oriented person. Makes me want to hire someone to deal w/ all this stuff.

ID verification for Driver's licenses are the same in most states. It's not NYS alone. Even CA needs to see the actual SS card now.

Nope. I checked the CA DMV site and they say you need to tell them your SSN and they verify while you're there. That and a drivers license from another state. Driver License and Identification (ID) Card Information

Even when I talked to insurance companies. They said,' oh NY, they're very picky about how everything is done more than any state.' I didn't believe it until now and I wonder why.

Sounds like CA is one step ahead of the game, as they can just verify it there. I think that's the only difference, NYS can't do it there.

FWIW, it's not any different than getting a DL in Texas. I went through the same process in both places, and they had the same requirements.
