I was happy to read that Michigan is an ok place to raise a family.

Spring Arbor is right up my alley and meets everything we need in our lifestyle.

This is a 2009 article but I think it has some valid points...

Middle Class New Yorkers Fleeing State - WSJ.com

The key I feel is this.....
"The departures also have perilous budget consequences, since they tend to include residents who are better off than those arriving."

Numerically NY may not lose a lot of residents because a lot of people are coming in too.... but if the above trend keeps on, then we might just have Hempsteads and Hamptons out here, lol.

I speak to friends in Michigan, Florida and California who tell me how bad everything is in their states with 0 jobs or growth. Housing markets have collapsed in many areas of their state. I'll stay here and deal with the taxes and traffic!

I think you missed the entire point... The key is what demographic is leaving and what demographic is replacing them.
