It's one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city.... racially, ethnically, and socio economically.A real polyglot.
It is about 35% Hispanic of many different varieties,30% white,20 or 25% black( almost equally represented by Africans,African Americans and Caribbeans) and 10 or 15% other(mostly various Asian groups. The white population itself is very diverse as it is divided up by the long standing Jewish and Italian population and a fairly large number of more recent Eastern European ( Russian,Albanian) Right now it has the largest concentration of Albanians in the US and they have established a real stronghold with a very visible(and audible) presence. There is a sizable moslem population ( black and white) as many( maybe 1/2) of the Albanians are moslems.
One of the main shopping streets in the neighborhood,Lydig Avenue, is a bizarre mix of Kosher butcher and deli next to Italian bakery next to Albanian coffee shop next to Mexican take out next to health food store next to a Pakistani owned hardware store next to a pizza place kind of thing where you will see women in chadors shopping alongside 80 yr old Jewish women who have lived in the neighborhood for 60 years and Albanian women in black dresses with black shoes and kerchiefs .
There are a lot of teachers and other city employees and a fair amount of younger people (students) because it is very close to Fordham.
The weird thing is that despite this racial, ethnic and economic stew there are very few problems and everyone seems to get along. No turf battles and little crime.
The Asians and Eastern Europeans seem to be increasing their numbers the most right now( last 10 years or so ).
