I'm thinking of moving into an apt. on Court St. near the courthouse, near the Barnes & Noble, the UA Cinema, and various fast food joints. I'm a single female. Is this a safe area to come home late to by subway? By late I mean sometimes the wee hours. I'm sensible, no flashy jewelry or iphone and such. This place is quite cheap and I'm sort of wondering if there's a reason. Thanks.
Yes, it is extremely safe. I work in that area and live a few blocks east, in Boerum Hill. I'm surprised you found anything cheap in that neighborhood. The only issue that comes to mind is that a lot of people in the area consider the UA Cinema to be a bad neighbor, but that's more annoying than dangerous.
The area is great. As to a reason why the price might be so cheap: whenever something seems too good to be true, it probably is! No matter what you decide to do, I hope you won't take the place sight unseen.
Thanks for the replies. I looked at it, it's pretty nice. It's a studio above a fast food place, nothing fancy, but it gets sun and you can go on the roof, which is a nice extra. I wouldn't say it's "too good to be true" at $1200 but it's a relative bargain. It faces the back so it's quiet.
The area is safe. I am wondering why it is only 1200. Since there is no problem with the area, there might be some problems with the apartment itself (heating, insulation, wiring, etc) check this apartment out and look very closely at its condition.
More likely the surprising rent is because it's above a fast food place. That's not supposed to be "desirable." (Of course, in this day and age, one can't always afford to be so choosy!)
It's small but not teeny tiny. I think the answer is the fast food place, or perhaps has to do with the amount of time the last person was there? If they don't renovate aren't they only allowed to raise it a certain percentage? Looking at co-op listings, I see the area has some affordable places--surprising. I think in a nice building a similar studio would be about 1400 to rent. The rents don't seem as bad as Park Slope.
