based on this:
Manhattan Salaries Ranked Highest in U.S. - Salaries for U.S. Counties

manhattan workers make way more than the US average, but the other 4 boroughs make less...and it's still more expensive than the average American city/town...
so how do people in the other 4 boros live comfortably? or do the majority of people live very poor lives? I was always under the impression that NYC was insanely expensive, but most people also made more...true for manhattan, but it's only 20% of NYC's population..

A lot of people are in rent-controlled apartments.

Frankly, that source may or may not be giving the wrong impression, as it doesn't define itself fully.

The figures are averages based upon county; but, it doesn't state whether it's for workers who work in the county or live in the county.

For example, the majority of workers in Kings, Queens or Bronx counties work in New York county which is Manhattan. If the average is based where one works, then NY county will be extraordinarily high. If based where a worker lives, then NY county would still be considerably higher than the other counties, but perhaps a bit less.

Oh, I'm certain its based upon where the county the worker works. I just noted Hillsborough county, FL, which is Tampa, a place I'm quite familiar with. The average is $809, while Kings county, Brooklyn is $788, and Queens is $831. Those are ridiculous numbers. There is no way that Tampa has a higher salary than Brooklyn and near that of Queens.

Additionally, if the average is of the people who work in the county, then Hillsborough's figure is equally as skewed, as it would include the salaries of everyone commuting into Tampa, from as far north as Hernando county and as far south as Sarasota county. If based just upon those who live in the county, then Hillsborough would be MUCH lower, as it is generally a poor county. The overwhelming majority of workers live outside the county. You know poor inner city core with wealthy suburban rings. Though recently, there's been, like in most major cities, an influx of neo-yuppies and hipsters. Not enough though to skew the numbers, relative to the larger population its a tiny percentage.
