Very safe neighborhood. If you feel unsafe in Bayside you should probably move out of NYC.
You can go jogging at cross island running path at 3 am and bell boulevard always has people walking around.
Police are proactive in patrolling residential areas.
The only "issue" with Bayside is the large number of drug addicts but this is the result of kids with rich parents and nothing else to do with their time. However they tend to keep to themselves so you won't have to worry about a crackhead running around.
i would agree, if you ddon't feel safe here than i would say nyc is not for you.
Stay away from Bourbon Street in Bell. It's not safe there. The calories can kill you.
