I'm a single white female in my early 20s and I've lived right next to the Gates Coop. for almost a year now. I've never had a problem with anyone. It does get a little loud sometimes (lots of people out BBQ'ing and playing music), but everyone I've met so far is very friendly and kind. It's a good community vibe. Just be careful when walking home at night, and always act like you know where you're going....that goes for anywhere in the city though.
