Does anyone commute from NY (Manhattan area) to NJ for work? I'm moving to NY at the end of the summer and considering a job in Jersey City/Orange, and I'm wondering how terrible the commute would be by car.

Going to NJ in the morning is not a problem, but coming home is a bear. WHY on earth do you want to have a car in NYC? Garages start at about $400/month and go up from there. And if you don't have a garage, then you'll spend a HUGE part of your life looking for a parking place. Not to mention the cost of insurance.

Public transportation would be the way to go.

I definitely plan on taking public transportation if I can, but I may need the car for the job. Thanks for the info :-)

I'd live in a nice part of New Jersey and commute to Manhattan, a quick commute all things considered, to avoid the Hudson crossings. The delays can snowball, starting out at 20 minutes and then swell to over an hour, once you're already committed to the route. You could find a place in Jersey City, Fort Lee, Weehawken, etc. and have a nice view of the city, even be within easy PATH access to Manhattan and be able to get to/from work with relative ease.

i'm actually doing a reverse commute - living in NY and working in NJ. the move to NY is definite, and while I'd love to also work there, I'm having a hard time finding something. i figured something fairly close in NYC (jersey city/orange) would be better than commuting from NYC to central NJ, where I'm working now. we've checked out the places you mentioned in NJ to live, but my boyfriend has been making the commute from NJ to NY for a few years now and he needs to get NYC living out of his system, at least for one year

I have a friend who lives in Manhattan and commutes to Joisey City every day. She uses the PATH and has no difficulties what so ever.

i used to commute to FT LEE from lower Manhattan. and i used to drive. never had any problems getting to the office. it would take me 15-20 mins..

returning, on the other hand, was hit or miss. it could take me 30 mins or an hour and 30 mins.
