140 238th Street, Bronx, NY - corner of 238th and Bailey. Is this a safe apartment bldg and neighborhood for a young woman traveling the 1 train to midtown daily?

I think that area is generally quite safe though I don't live there so I don't know for sure block by block.I think a frequent poster, rlrl ,lives very near there and will probably know more.

Default yeah i bike thru there every day

i don't know the bldg you mention per se but area is working class, better than average area for the bronx, but be careful late at night because it's quiet around there, cellphone robberies and stickups, while infrequent, they still can happen late at night

area has changed tho it remains very stable

south of 238th on Bailey can be desolate at night, stick to 238th street for the train and shopping at night

Thank you. The 5-story apt building is the only bldg on the SW corner of 238th & Bailey. Around 238th Street, is the other side of Broadway safer late at night?

Default yeah

i've seen that one right by the bus stop. i bike past that several times a week.

generally other side of broadway is considered more desirable as it's kingsbridge whereas up the hill past bailey it's kingsbridge heights which is a little grittier and rougher

on the other side you have the diner, rite aid, and farther west the 238th street step street.

but really you're not talking about any significant increase in crime in this area or anything bad. east or west it's still a thriving area with a low crime rate.

I have a couple of friends who live in the building and have for a few years as far as I know. I even crashed there one night. Nice area. I recommend Pipers Kilt as your first meal there. Great Wings. 231 and Albany Creascent. Take a right on Bailey from the building, take the fork to the right onto Albany Creascent, when you get to 231, Pipers will be looking at you.

I am almost ready to sign an apt contract for a 2bdrm in 140 Van Cortland Ave West (SE corner of Van Cortland Ave & Bailey). I wanted to reach out one more time for a safety report. The walk to the 1 train would be south along Bailey to 238th and then west on 238th to the station. There may be times walking back from the station at 1am. What can you tell me?
