Help,

We are planning to move from Atlanta into the Eastchester, Bronx house my grandmother left to my father. It is a blessing to have an inexpensive house to live in since we have 3 sons. We will work at our family's business and money is an issue, yet we need our sons to go to good public schools. Is it possible to go to a school out of zone?

Elementary: very few

Middle: some

High: most

In other words, yes you can. The younger your kids are, the more restrictive the zoning gets.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I am interested in any details on how to do this.

You can find out what elementary/middle school(s) you're zoned to at the NYC DoE website. There will also be instructions there on how to apply for schools in other areas. As "009" said, most elementary schools are neighborhood schools, so you may not have too many options with that (unless, perhaps, you can find a charter or magnet school), but after that you will have more options.

A great site for unbiased reviews is Inside Schools, which lets you search by borough, zip code, or school name/number.

Best of luck!

Hello
what if you live next to a zone where you want to send your child to. basically one neighborhood over, but different zone and zip code?

Is there another link for instructions for children who are not zoned to a specific school?

Elementary School Admissions - Elementary Schools - New York City Department of Education

That is what I found, and it states applications are at the school.

I called the main office at one school and was abruptly interrupted once she determined my child was not zoned for that school.

Elementary:always try charter
Middle:very few but you can try charter
High School:Specialized high schools, some alternative high schools,
some regular public high schools will take out of zone students if there is room but priority is to zoned children.
