My buddy is thinking about joining the u.s. Coast guard for 4 years but he only wants to do it if his 4 years will count in the nypd, meaning he does 4 years in the coast guard and then only would have to be a cop for 16 years to retire. I called nypd recruit because I had a couple of questions to ask but they did not give me a clear answer if anybody has any info on this please reply thanks

No you don't get to carry your time over from the military. However, I think there is a two year military or college requirement to get on the NYPD, so his four years in the Coast Guard will help him meet that requirement without going to college.

do you know if his time will count on the back end of his pension meaning he will receive a pension for 24 years of service?

It counts on the back end.

ok, from what i heard you would make more money on your pension doing 24 years of nypd then 20 years nypd and 4 years coast guard is this true or would coast guard give you more or would it be equal?

Military time does not count towards NYPD retirement. NOt up front, not on the back end. However, if you served in wartime and were actually assigned to the combat area of operations, then you can buy back those yrs that you served in combat. This means you write a check to the state pension system and they knock off those yrs and let you retire early.

I think the buyback is about 5K a yr, but I may be wrong. Also, you can stay past 20, buy back time and then retire with a 25, 30, 35, or 40 yr retirement, which is a higher percentage of salary than th 50% you get at 20.

thanks for the info hes decided to just go back to college. since were on the subject of the NYPD i have a few questions of my own. i took a exam in 2007 and received a 87 and was called for appointment. I was still in high school so i could not go so they put my case in a cold file and told me to call back after college and reopen it. I was not 17 and a half to date the day i took the test i was about 17 and 5 months, would this pose a problem? and my second question is i just recieved another grade of 87 on a recent test i took right when the new salary hike came out and my list number is 347 do i have a pretty good chance of getting called for appointment?

My husband retired in 2007 and did a military buyback for time served during wartime (Beirut) and he was able to retire early. He did 3 years as a correction officer, 13 years as a police officer and then was able to retire at 20 including that 4 years of military, which we paid for (buyback).
