I have had some FANSTASTIC pizza in this city but the average slice I have had here is not very good - Papa John's and Dominos can easily compete, as another forumer has mentioned. Though some of this country's best pizza (DiFara, Grimaldi, Totonno) can be found here, I have had many a slice here that is greasy, heavy, and of bad taste.. I would actually prefer Dominos or Papa John's to some of the terrible $3.50/slice pizza that is served in the average Manhattan pizzeria... even some of the places near me in Brooklyn are bad!
Sorry, I didnt see that you mentioned Difara's Pizza. I agree with you about the fact is that there is alot of really bad pizza in NYC. I recently moved to Pennsylvania and people here seem to think that if pizza is made in NY its great. That is not true. Maybe NYC has some of the best pizza but it also has some of the worst!!! Here in Pa. I have seen pizza with american cheese on it. Well if you dont expect it its really bad but if you know that its on it then you might find it edible. But there is also some good pizza here too!!!
It's a funny thing. I live in Los Angeles county California. Every now and then one bumps into an ex New Yorker. The thiing we all seem to meet the most is...DA PIZZA!!! First of all, what's called pizza out here is nothing more than stiff cardboard with tomato sauce. Secondly, most places do not sell by the slice.
Grimaldi's in Dumbo, though if you were to say Di Fara in Midwood or Totonno's on Coney Island, I won't argue with you. They're all great.
Am I the only person here who thinks John's on Bleecker is nothing special? I was markedly underwhelmed when I went there, and most people I know who've been there agree with me.
Also, gotta represent the SI: Goodfellas (which has already been mentioend), and the clam pie at Lee's Tavern in Dongan Hills. High-quality stuff.
Out of all the ones ive tried, I liked Famiglia's. I think theres more than one location.
