In my opinion, Nathan's in Coney Island is the best. For some reason, the Nathan's not in Coney Island (franchises?) are not bad, but not as good.

In my opinion, Gray's Papaya and Papaya King are pretty much the same, and I like both very much.

There are a few "fake" Papaya hot dog places, like fake Ray's pizza, that are hit or miss.

Not only has Nathan's--of course I mean the original in Coney Island--got the best hot dogs, but they've also got the best fries. (And it's true; at the Coney Island place, you can still get frog's legs!)

I prefer hot dogs charcoal grilled - or even gas flame grilled as a second choice. The key is that they need to be little charred.

I haven't found a place in NYC that prepares hot dogs this way. Does anyone know of one?

neither have I, Upstater. the only time I get to enjoy 'em this way is in the summer sitting in the backyard of a relative's house in Queens over a barbecue grill where one can enjoy a beautiful summer evening with a beer or soda and a lovely well done charcoal grilled dog.

It seems with the plethora of restaurants in NYC, why can't someone install a charcoal grill and cook not only great-tasting dogs, but burgers and chicken too? Fish is better over charcoal too.

There are now at least five authentic smoked-meat barbecue joints in Manhattan alone. A charcoal grill seems pretty simple in comparison.

The 79th Street Boat Basin Cafe offers grilled foods that are done well, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.

Also, Five Points on Great Jones Street has a char-grilled burger on all of its menus, and has in the past offered grilled items at the outdoor sidewalk seating area during the summer.

So, they might be worth checking out for the grilled flavor.

Edit: 79th St Boat Basin also has vegetarian entrees and turkey burgers on their regular menu. They do change the menu for Oktoberfest, however.
