I currently live in Albany (yeah I know it sucks don't remind me). This may be a tall order to fill. But I got an offer down in NYC job is for like $60K/year. Here's the catch! My wife is disabled, she gets no assistance from any gov't agencies. That's right I pay for it all, what the insurance company doesn't.
What I want/need to know is what can I afford and where? I'm hoping there are some seasoned NYC veterans that know the city economy. I'm not looking to live in some place that's the ritz but at the same time I don't want to have to war with the crackheads everyday. I do enough of that now!
I own my own car (no payments), don't own a house (rent).
Using the "40 rent" rule, the most you should pay for your rent is $1500. As far as where in (or around) New York, it depends on your preferences and needs. How long do you want to commute - and do you want to commute at all? Do you want to be near a park? Easy access to amenities - things of that nature.
You mentioned you have a car. Having the largest public transportation system in the United States, this is far from a car-reliant city so you may find yourself not driving it as much.

Thanks K22. I don't drive alot now even in Albany. Take the bus to and from work (only a 20 min trip one way on the bus). I've been in the city before mostly on the trains, had friends in wash. heights (177/175 & B'way).
Other thing that crossed my mind is NYC has extra taxes just to live there. Hmmm .. have to really think about this. I also have one that doesn't work so I have to dish out for her entertainment, clothes and stuff. Granted, if you know where to shop you can get some great deals on stuff. Hey, is Conway still in business?
OH, have to give you dap by the way on what on your ipod. Me (don't laff now) Biz Markie, Kool Moe Dee, Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five, Lords of the Underground, Whodini and the list goes on. I get looks when I throw the pod in the sys in car and bump on down the street. It's old skool .. so what?!

YOUUUUU, you got what I neeeed, but you say he's just a friend...
I don't know if you should really worry about the taxes; I don't think it's enough to make a huge difference, although if you wanted to live on Long Island, then that's a different story...

I think he/she meant payroll tax. people outside the boroughs don't pay nyc payroll. If you rent, r/e tax is kinda irrelevant
Look for a co-op in Central or Southern Westchester. Affordable, deductions, safe areas easy commute to NYC and you can have a car.
All the best!
