Me an my girlfriend are currently trying to figure out what we want to do with the rest of our lives. I will be graduating from college next spring as an Elementary School Teacher. One of the areas we are considering looking into is NYC. I have looked into an know that starting as a teacher I would make around $44k a year. So probably about $34-36k after taxes (just a rough idea). I would like to know from those that have experience in the area whether or not I can realistically make it in NYC with that salary. I will be the sole income until my girlfriend can get a job there so I have to take that into consideration.
Starting out I would live in an apartment. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am not looking for anyone to sugar coat their thoughts. I am a realist, so I want realistic answers. I don't want you all to think you need to try an boost my moral or give me false hope. The two most important things me and my girlfriend are basing our decision on is affordability and safety.
I think between 31K and 32K might be more accurate for take-home. There is a link to an online tax calculator in this thread Can I Live On this Salary in NYC?
It'll definitely be tough financially on just your income, but once your girlfriend gets a job, it'll be easier. One thing to note, though, is that elementary school teachers are not especially in high demand in the city (unless, of course, you're certified in Special Ed, or bilingual, etc.).
Very difficult to do on one income, especially being a teacher. If your girlfriend worked then it would ease the financial pain a little bit.
