There are so many restaurants, you would really have to narrow it down by category: Street food or formal, Chinese, French, Korean, etc.

In general, I think Aquagrill (in Soho) has the best seafood and their raw bar is to die for. I like steak frites at Les Hall, and Per Se is the best fancy schmancy once in a lifetime dining experiences you will ever have. Blue Water Grill in Union Square does a great brunch.

Default Restaurants

My favorite is Wylie Dufresne's WD-50 in Clinton Street, Lower East Side. Incredible intelligent food that fills your brain, makes you smile and also cry (it is that good). Now, I understand- molecular gastronomy is not for everyone.

For six bucks and if you're looking to fill your belly, Harriet's Kitchen (Amsterdam Av & 84th St in the UWS) has the juiciest, thickest and most affordable burgers in Manhattan.

I also love the Ethiopian restaurants of Hell's Kitchen, authentic food at great prices.

But there are so many places to eat and love in New York!

For fine dining I adore Jean-Georges. My brother is in the restaurant biz and I did Financial work for a restaurant company so I know a little about the biz. It is understated in an elegant way. The first time I met Chef he was so professional and down to earth. It was six months later I visited his flagship and he rememberd me. With all the somebodys that frequent he always remembers the nobodys! I am very impressed with him. For four years now I dine at Jean-Georges 3-4 times a year.

Asian- Ruby Foo's in Times Sqaure- The Lobster and Shrimp spring rolls are phenomanal! Very friendly service and clean!

Danube in Tribeca- Egletic Austrian food. Great atmosphere and interesting crusine.

I love Bleecker Street Pizza and Prince Street Pizza. LOL. Really, though, I haven't explored much in the way of restaurants here in NYC...being single, I just don't go out to eat very often--or I go to like, Pret a Manger or some grab & go place. :/ I have sooooo many places bookmarked on Yelp to try, but don't get the chance to go out to eat much. The Mermaid Oyster Bar in the East Village has some delicious happy hour seafood stuff. I'm always looking for a great oyster/seafood happy hour! I gotta try Aquagrill, as someone mentioned above.

Really need to do it by category.

Alidoro for Italian sandwiches.
Dinosaur BBQ
San Loco for Mexican
Mamoun's for falafels

Shake Shack is good, but I only go when lines are short.

I've been living in NYC for 16 years now and I can honestly say I have only been to about 10 restaurants total (usually just once). Most of us can't afford them.
