What/where are some of the most authentic italian restaurants in NYC? Are there mom-and-pop places where they serve salumi with pickled vegetables and make a really good risotto?

If you venture into the Bronx you must try Frankie & Johnie's Pine Tavern. Great food.

There used to be a place on Beach 116 St in Rockaway called Tiberio's, a true mom & pop place... I don't know if it is still there.

Not fancy & more along the lines of a pizzeria, but I also highly suggest Gino's in Howard Beach... and Lenny's Clam Bar, too. Actually, Gino's in Bay Ridge is outstanding and so is the Gino's in Long Beach. Must be something in the name since I don't think they are related!

Bamonte's in Williamsburg. That is a Saturday night tradition for me and the girl.

Diesel the bartender and Funzi the parking lot guy are really nice people and hysterical to talk to.

Left NY for TX in '76, but grew up in Greenpoint, Bklyn and ate many wonderful meals at Barmonte's. I'm glad it's still there and will stop in on my next visit. Do they still bring a bottle of Zambuca to the table when you order expresso at the end of your meal? Great food, great place!

Babbo's food is as close as it gets to Italy. However, it is very difficult to get reservations and it's quite pricey, but very worth it! Of course if you are interested in family style meals with lots of tomato sauce this is not the place. In fact in Italy the restaurants specialize more in creative, exciting and fragrant meals rather than your pasta and sauce stuff that we are so used to here.

I remember in Murano a couple of locals sitting next to us and devouring a huge plate of steaming grilled fish, made fun of us because we kept on ordering pasta all the time. Oh well, we enjoyed it.

I second Dominick's in the Bronx. Long communal tables, no menu, great food. Go there.

Manducatti (spelling?) in Long Island City and also Manetta's - within walking distance of each other. Oh yes. La Via Bella also in that same walking area on Vernon Blvd.
