Wow I have been reading a recent post by Guywithacause about people hating hipsters and yuppies. Holy Sh*t! 154 pages. Jackpot!
This is obviously a touchy subject. I am from New Zealand and intend to move to NYC in 2009. Probably looking at Brooklyn. I wear tight black jeans, chucks and like rock n roll. Am I going to get spat at and sour looks from people?
To be honest I don't really know what the hell a hipster is? We don't use that word. Anyway I have always wanted to live in New York and by god I am gonna do it? Where should I mix it up? Any advice for a 24 year old male who is looking to make some friends and give New York a good shake would be much appreciated.
Williamsburg is neighborhood with the highest concentration of "hipsters" in the city. Though hipsters can be found in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and throughout Brooklyn, Williamsburg is their mecca. If you live in a nice area with a diversity of ages/incomes/cultures, no one will look at you weird or spit at you. In a wealthy area, you might get a few looks but no one will spit at you! However, you might get a totally different reaction if you move to a poor, black neighborhood on the verge of gentrification. It seems that generally, neighborhoods where gentrification is happening or about to happen have the most tension between hipsters and old-time residents. I wouldn't worry about it too much; I responded to your other post and suggested some good neighborhoods for you where how you dress really won't matter.
Reading your opening statements I was ready to sell the house and move to New York. Then I seen that you are a male.
Guess I'll stay where I am.
Damn, thought a wild woman was going to turn NYC upside down.
Hey welcome (soon) to NYC! Don't be put off by my post...it is more a response to the unbrideled ignorant statements about Hipsters on this forum than anything else. The city is choc full of every kind of person you can think of, and not everyone loves eachother.....so there is always somebody saying something about somebody else...human nature. Don't worry about it....the city is actually very welcoming to just about everyone, although if you just get your info from this site you would think it is full of millionaires and there are 5 poor people left...which is FAR from reality.
You will no doubt enjoy yourself...and if somebody calls you a Hipster...take pride in that! There are far worse things to be called!

Please ignore the "yuppie/hipster" thread. Come to NYC, live wherever you want, and wear anything that makes you happy. Be respectful of the people in the neighborhood you move into, and you will be fine.
Ok I exaggerated a bit with the getting spat at call. I know thats not gonna happen.
I have read a bit about these hipsters and there are a lot of different views on them but I think I have found the defining factor that makes me not one of these people. I love sport! And I can't wait to check out Yankee stadium when I get there. I don't have any interest in art and love drinking beer and watching sport and have played sport my whole life so I can't be a hipster. Brilliant!
I want a place with a good sense of humour and a melting pot for young people who are good socialisers. I do find that a lot of the more emo types are a little down on life and are not great socially so maybe Williamsburg isn't the place for me. What do you all think?
