I think you would do better in the city than in Queens or Bronx.

This is obviously a touchy subject. I am from New Zealand and intend to move to NYC in 2009. Probably looking at Brooklyn. I wear tight black jeans, chucks and like rock n roll. Am I going to get spat at and sour looks from people?
To be honest I don't really know what the hell a hipster is? We don't use that word. Anyway I have always wanted to live in New York and by god I am gonna do it? Where should I mix it up? Any advice for a 24 year old male who is looking to make some friends and give New York a good shake would be much appreciated.
Don't worry, there are 8 bazillion people here that would fit your description, especially in Manhattan and the northwestern, trendy neighborhoods of Brooklyn (not just Williamsburg).

"Tight jeans" are coming back, and the hipsters are not the only ones wearing them! The baggy jeans will be out on the way out within a decade, although hoop shorts will stay!!!!!!

I think I might like to live with some NYU students. Have been looking on Craigslist and there are are few students looking for roommates. I think that would be fun. Is there an area of Brooklyn where all the student tend to live or is it just all over the place?

Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint, Fort Green, Clinton Hill, parts of Bed Stuy, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Sunset Park.

Some of these neighborhoods are too pricey for many students (ie, Park Slope) and some are immigrant neighborhoods with a recent influx of students/recent college students (ie, Sunset Park), but, all in all, this list covers the parts of Brooklyn where young people from out of town are most likely to live.

No way! That sucks for me. When does the season end? I am gonna be in NYC in about April 09. I am guessing that the season will be well and truely over.
Thanks Beetlez for the post. From looking at Craigslist there seems to be a lot of places available in Bushwick. Have heard mixed reviews on that area though. Thanks again

Bushwick is NOT a nice neighborhood. For someone who is moving to NYC from across the world, I would name Bushwick as one of the LAST places you'd want to live. It is seriously ghetto. If you want more affordable neighborhoods that still have a lot of young people, go with (South) Park Slope, Fort Green, Boerum Hill, Clinton Hill, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint. In Queens, check out Astoria; a couple of friends I know live there and know plenty of 20-somethings who moved there from other parts of the country and other parts of the world.

Bushwick isn't a pretty place, but young people are moving there in droves, so I'm pretty sure there are parts of it that aren't all that horrific. And the same goes for Bed Stuy/Clinton Hill. Sorry if I didn't mention that parts of these areas can get dicey--dumb omission on my part. I think Astoria would be preferable to Bushwick and Bed Stuy, for sure, but I was just talking about Brooklyn.
